Poor financial skills and a lack of basic education regarding consumer credit, banking, retirement planning, and income tax filing contribute substantially to a decreased standard of living and lower socio-economic status of America's marginalized poor, including those in the targeted neighborhoods of Cedar Rapids. In a coordinated effort with the IRS and various federal, state, and local agencies, four VITA Centers have been established in Central Cedar Rapids.
Outside of tax season, Weed and Seed continues its financial assistance and education through seminars and outreach programs. Through partnerships with local banks and other financial institutions, residents can learn about the importance of holding a bank account, maintaining good credit, and managing an income.
