Restorative Initiatives...

  1. Code Enforcement
  2. NEAT
  3. BRIGHTEN

The Code Enforcement Division is a part of the Fire Department and consists of building, electrical, fire, housing, mechanical, plumbing and zoning inspectors.  The Code Enforcement Division provides acceptance of building permit applications, issuance of all building and trade (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) permits, and inspection of construction activities for compliance with current codes. In addition, the department accepts applications and issues licenses to individuals and contractors who desire to engage in the installation, alteration, repair, relocation or replacement of electrical, plumbing or mechanical systems or equipment.  The Code Enforcement Division also conducts a rental inspection program to ensure that rental housing stock is brought up and maintained to the minimum standards established by the code. Such inspections help ensure that the occupants of these units are provided with acceptable levels of maintenance and habitability. Code Division staff are also involved with new and existing building fire inspections, issuing permits, supervising fire crew inspections, and conducting plan reviews.

NEAT is an acronym for Neighborhood Enhancement Action Team.  NEAT is a part of the Enhance Our Neighborhood (EON) initiative and is supported by the City Council, City Manager, neighborhood groups and other citizens on the EON committee.  NEAT allows neighborhood police officers and code enforcement staff to work in a coordinated, collaborative team-approach to neighborhood problems.   One of the primary goals is to solve some of the chronic issues that involve an inordinate amount of staff time and resources, and, more importantly, are problems that need to be solved in neighborhoods.

BRIGHTEN is a grassroots initiative to address housing and zoning code violations with the help of neighbors and the larger community.
